Is there any surfing in Alabama? ›

Although Alabama may not be number 1 on your list of surf states you have to visit, it definitely deserves a spot somewhere on that list. From the impressive waves you can find on Orange Beach, to the empty lineups on Dauphin Island, the presence of surf here is getting harder and harder to deny.

The Gulf waters of Alabama are warmer than the beaches on the Atlantic coast. The waves tend to be more gentle, rarely rising or falling more than a foot or so.

Sarasota County Lido Beach and Siesta Key are worthy of note, but the mack daddy of them all is Venice Beach. On Florida's northwest Gulf coast, you'll find surfers riding "the Bungalows" of Perdido Key, "The Wall" and "Pier" in Pensacola and "The Breakers" in Fort Walton Beach.

Depths in the inlet range from nine to 17 feet, with the west (port on entry) side of the inlet holding the best depths as a long shoal extends west into the inlet near the east jetty (this shoal appears in the lighter water above).

Dauphin Island Pier in Alabama is a quite exposed beach break that has reasonably consistent surf. The best conditions for surfing are during the hurricane season. Ideal winds are from the north northwest. Windswells are much more typical than groudswells and the ideal wave direction is from the south southeast.

The surf around the Gulf Coast consists mostly of wind swells with short period clean-up sessions. It is often onshore. Some of the best surf is produced during the Hurricane season. The water in the Gulf of Mexico is reasonably warm all year round.

The Gulf of Mexico is normally peaceful and the bottom configuration is a gradual slope away from the shore. Rideable waves occur when there is a storm nearby, sometimes it is too dangerous to be out there.
