Hearing aid batteries supply continuous power to keep your hearing aids working properly. Making certain that you have the right batteries is essential for these devices to function smoothly. But with a large amount of hearing aid batteries on the market, it can be difficult to decide which one is best for you.

“Sometimes you have a choice in what you purchase, but other times, you have to take what you can get, such as in the case of traveling and needing to shop at a drugstore,” says Georgine Ray, an audiologist and owner of Affiliated Audiology Consultants in Phoenix, Arizona. “The most critical aspect is choosing the appropriate size that’s necessary for your particular hearing aid model.”

To determine the best hearing aid batteries, the Forbes Health editorial team researched and ranked products across the market in terms of cost, availability, storage life and more.

Different Types of Hearing Aid Batteries

Generally, there are two types of hearing aid batteries: zinc-air disposable batteries and rechargeable batteries.

Zinc-Air Disposable Batteries

Zinc-air batteries use air as their energy source and are activated by oxygen when you remove the tab attached to the battery. Zinc-air disposable batteries come in four sizes and work with many types of hearing aids.

Rechargeable Batteries

Rechargeable hearing aid batteries are most often lithium-ion batteries that must be recharged for three to four hours regularly. Since they’re reusable, rechargeable hearing aid batteries are more environmentally friendly than disposable batteries. However, rechargeable batteries also have drawbacks, such as the user being without a hearing aid while recharging and the need to pack a charger when you travel. Many hearing aid models come with their own rechargeable batteries.

Zinc-Air Disposable vs. Rechargeable Batteries

Zinc-air disposable batteries come in large quantities, are easily replaced by the user and are suited to more hearing aid types than rechargeable hearing batteries. On the other hand, rechargeable batteries are better for the environment and maybe more cost-efficient in the long run since you’re not regularly discarding them. Rechargeable batteries may also hold their power longer than zinc batteries if you’re using Bluetooth and streaming services, and they’re easier to handle than small button batteries. However, some types of hearing aids are not suited to rechargeable battery use.

Hearing aid battery manufacturer Power One recommends its customers see if their hearing aids can keep a current for 10 days without needing to replace zinc batteries. If so, the hearing aid may be compatible with a rechargeable battery. Consult your hearing health professional or audiologist for help in deciding which battery is best for your hearing aid.

Sizes of Hearing Aid Batteries

Hearing aid batteries come in four sizes, with color-coded packaging for easy identification.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How long do hearing aid batteries last?

Zinc-air button hearing aid batteries generally have at least a 3-year storage life, but “the life of these batteries once the tab is removed will be dictated by the battery drain of the hearing aid model and the size of the battery,” says Ray. “The range will be anywhere from four to 10 days. Battery life is shortened by the more Bluetooth streaming you use (if your model allows for that feature).”

Rechargeable hearing aid batteries generally require charging overnight to maintain hearing aid power throughout the day. “Rechargeable batteries don’t last forever and will need to be replaced every two to three years, on average,” says Ray. “[A] rechargeable battery [charge] can last a day and a half to two days with regular use or less if using Bluetooth streaming,” she adds.

How do I care for my hearing aid batteries?

Store disposable hearing aid batteries at room temperature and avoid placing them in extreme temperatures, such as in the refrigerator, which can quickly drain battery life. Also, avoid storing hearing aid batteries in the bathroom where high humidity levels can shorten battery life.

Turn off your hearing aid when not in use to extend battery life. And when you go to bed, open the battery compartment to reduce the risk of condensation, which can drain battery power, or remove the battery entirely.

Don’t remove the hearing aid tab on disposable batteries until you’re ready to use them—removing the tab activates the battery and begins to drain it. Once you remove the tab, wait about 5 minutes before inserting the battery in your hearing aid to help extend the battery’s life by a few days.

What’s the best hearing aid battery option for me?

Choosing the best hearing aid battery option depends on the type of hearing aid you use, along with your personal preferences, such as liking the convenience of disposable batteries more than having to recharge a hearing aid battery every night. Consult the audiologist who performed your hearing examination and fitted your hearing aid for assistance in choosing the best hearing aid battery for you.
