Forgo Lawry’s seasoned salt, make it your own

  1. You can use the seasoning salt on almost all the dishes, use it instead of salt. It elevates the dish.
  2. This seasoning enhances the flavor and taste of all the dishes you use.
  3. A blend of simple spices that most probably are in your pantry already.
  4. You’ll only need 6 ingredients. All natural ingredients, no artificial flavoring or chemicals used.
  5. It’s versatile, super easy to make, and requires pantry staples. You can customize this homemade seasoning salt recipe as per your taste or depending on what you are cooking.
  6. This salt adds wonderful heat to the dish (use it according to taste). If you do not want it spicy, ignore cayenne pepper.
  7. You can sprinkle this salt over meat or vegetables before or after grilling. It’s excellent on roasted chicken and potatoes, and can also be sprinkled over eggs, on salads (yes I love it on salads), on meat, steaks, seasoning burgers, and sliced avocados sprinkled with this salt is a great savory snack.
  8. Make a small jar of it and keep it near your cooking spot. Go sparking on all the dishes. Tasty and very useful as seasoning.

What is seasoned salt

If you are familiar with Lawry’s seasoned salt or other salts like garlic salt, and celery salt you would not be new to seasoned salt.

It’s a blend of herbs, spices, and salt, and one other ingredient is monosodium glutamate (MSG). Most store-bought salt has MSG. The salt is used to add flavor to the dish before or after cooking.

It’s easy to make your version of salt that will elevate the flavor of any dish by simply blending different spices and herbs to table salt but without using MSG, so it’s healthy to use.

Basic seasoned salt starts with salt, garlic powder, and onion powder. You can add other spices like cayenne pepper, smoked sweet paprika, ground pepper, Italian seasoning, and dried herbs like oregano, thyme, or rosemary for different styles of cooking.

Ingredients needed

The base is of course table salt along with garlic powder and onion powder. You can choose to add in other seasoning/spices depending on your taste or depending on different styles of cooking.

This recipe uses 6 basic pantry staples to make all-purpose seasoned salt.

Ingredients notes:

  • Salt: use kosher salt for best results. If you prefer to use sea salt, make sure to use finer grains of sea salt so it’s easy to sprinkle on dishes like eggs or soup just before eating.
  • Pepper: freshly ground pepper is hard to beat. It has a fresh flavor and taste.
  • Garlic granules: I prefer garlic granules over garlic powder. Granules add better texture to the salt. Feel free to use garlic powder if you can’t get granule garlic.
  • Onion granules: for the same reasons as garlic, using granular onion powder adds texture to the salt. Textured salt is better for seasoning meat and vegetables.
  • Cayenne pepper: adds heat. Feel free to adjust the quantity as per your heat tolerance levels. If you can’t handle a spicy kick, feel free to reduce the amount of cayenne pepper.
  • Smoked paprika: adds wonderful smoky flavor to any dish in which you use seasoned salt.

How to make

It’s straightforward to make. Simply mix all the spices, herbs, and salt.

Jo’s-Tip: if possible grind pepper and salt to the same texture of onion and garlic granules, so it adds texture to the salt and it has almost uniform granules! Crucial point to remember while seasoning meat or vegetables. It also makes it easy to pick with your fingers and sprinkle.

Why is homemade seasoned salt better than Lawry’s salt?

Lawry’s salt has ingredients like sugar, monosodium glutamate (MSG), chemicals (to make free-flowing), and flavor extracts instead of natural ingredients. Making it at home not only makes it healthier but you can also customize the flavors to your liking.

Storing info

If stored correctly this salt will keep for a very long time. Make sure to store it in a clean dry airtight jar and store it in a cool, dry, dark place like your spice drawer or pantry. If there is any moisture inside the salt or container, there is a risk of mold forming on the salt, and will spoil.

When stored correctly it will keep for 2-3 years.
