Automotive Technology Career Outlook and Salary Information

Automotive technician careers offer excellent opportunities for good pay, as well as high job satisfaction rates, and the chance to work with the latest in automotive technology. The job outlook for automotive technicians is also very good as the number of cars in operation continues to increase due to the growing number of multi-car families. And as an automotive technician, you will likely be able to expect steady work, as changes in economic conditions generally have minor effects on the automotive service industry. People will always drive cars, and cars will always eventually experience problems that need fixing.

If you have a background in automotive skills, or have completed an automotive training program or degree program from a vocational or technical school, you will find many opportunities in the automotive industry. In addition to a strong background in automotive skills, employers also look for applicants with strong reading, math, and computer skills, as these skills allow technicians to read and understand manuals, and to keep up with new technology.

Many automotive technician jobs are found with car dealerships, and independent repair shops. Other jobs are available with more specialized shops that deal primarily with one aspect of automotive maintenance or repair, such as brake repair, oil changes, or tire repair.

Automotive technicians are paid in a few different ways. Most automotive technicians work at an hourly wage that can average anywhere between $11 and $20 and hour depending on where you work. Experienced automotive technicians, or those employed by larger shops, like a car dealership, often receive a higher salary that is based on commission, meaning they get paid by the amount of work they do rather than by the hour. Salary varies depending on the employer and the area of the country that you work in. Salary also varies according to your skill level and experience. Some very experienced automotive technicians can earn up to $100,000 a year.
